Would you like to become a Family or Perinatal Support Volunteer?
As a Family Support Volunteer you will provide one to one support to a family going through challenging times. Depending on the unique situation of the family, you will offer them emotional and/or practical support. Examples of family issues may include isolation, low mood, long-term illness or disability of a parent or child or families struggling with parenting skills and boundaries.
As a Perinatal Support Volunteer you will support parents from 21 weeks of pregnancy up to 9 months after the birth who are struggling with:
• Existing mild mental health challenges and/or parent-infant relationship needs
or
• Are at risk of developing mild mental health challenges or parent-infant relationship needs due to prior mental health issues or other risk factors
What support is provided?
Support will consist of 2-3 hour weekly visits in the parent’s home or local community, lasting for up to six months.
The service aims to improve the mood and confidence of the parents it supports by providing practical and emotional help to families. Depending on the needs of the family the support may include:
• An empathetic and non-judgemental listening ear
• Support to prepare for parenthood
• Support to build confidence in parenting skills
• Support to develop a positive relationship with their infant
• Support to establish daily and weekly routines
• Support to take time for self-care
• Support to manage the things that are causing stress
• Support to access relevant services
• Support to access local green spaces
• Support to make connections with other parents
Both of these roles are a great opportunity for anyone wishing to gain experience of working alongside families or for those wanting to give something back to their local community.
All volunteers receive training and will have full support along the way from of our friendly team.
