The Cumberland County Beekeeper's Association is holding its annual short course soon! Mark your calendars for March 7, 2026! Where? The UT Experiment Station, located at 302 Experiment Station Rd, Crossville, TN 38571.
This is a fast and dirty course offered FOR FREE to anyone with an interest in beekeeping, whether you've got your first hives ready or none at all but just want to learn. Breakfast and lunch will be offered, donations are welcome but not necessary. This is one of the biggest events we hold each year, and every year I learn something new (and I've only been to two so far!).
Please be sure to bring a smoker if you've got one, because you'll get an opportunity to learn how to light one and make sure it stays going for at least an hour (it's a worst-case scenario test) -- I'm sure people will bring extras, so don't go and throw money at a smoker just to have one unless you're REALLY determined to be a beekeeper.
We have a tentative list of what will be discussed at the short course:
8:00-9:00 Setup and Light Breakfast
9:00-9:10 Welcome and smoker contest introduction
9:10-9:20 Smoker Contest Part 1 – (Lighting the smokers)
9:20-10:05 The Buzz about Bees
10:05-10:30 Protective Clothing
10:30-10:40 Smoker Contest Finale – (See whose smoker produces the most smoke)
10:50-11:20 Obtaining Bees
11:25-12:00 Lunch
12:00-12:35 Essential Beekeeping Equipment
12:35-1:00 Hive Inspection Basics
