Melbourne African Traditional Ensemble Bio
The Melbourne African Traditional Ensemble (MATE) is more than just a musical project; it's a vibrant tapestry woven from the rich traditions of Africa. Founded by the visionary radio presenter/producer, Stani Goma, MATE is a celebration of Pan-African unity through the universal language of music.
At its core, MATE is a convergence of traditional African instruments and seasoned musicians from diverse corners of the continent. Guided by the ethos of Ujamaa – the African principle of collective work and responsibility – the ensemble embarks on a journey of exploration, innovation, and collaboration.
Each composition is meticulously crafted, infused with the essence of togetherness, resilience, humour, and shared purpose. Through rigorous workshops and spirited improvisations, MATE conjures a sound that resonates with the heartbeat of Africa, transcending colonial boundaries and forging new musical frontiers.
Committed to its Pan-African vision, MATE continually expands its roster, inviting virtuosos from across the continent to join in the collective musical dialogue. Currently, the ensemble's repertoire encompasses the diverse music traditions of East Africa, Southern Africa, and West Africa.
As MATE strides forward, it remains steadfast in its mission to celebrate Africa's cultural heritage, foster collaboration, and inspire audiences with its unparalleled groove and spirit.
