Elizabeth Lake Migratory Bird Day
Saturday, May 10, 2025
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Please join us to learn more about the birds around Elizabeth Lake!
Activities for the day:
1. Cavity Nesting Ducks – this display is set up right beside the Tourist Information Center. Learn about the various duck species that nest in tree cavities or the nesting boxes placed around Elizabeth Lake rather than on the shoreline.
2. Bats – Come meet Scott and Judy Bodaly, who do the Bat research in the East Kootenay area, including the new Bat habitat established at Wycliffe Flats in 2024. Scott and Judy are located under the bat box in the field behind Elizabeth Lake Lodge.
3. Bluebirds – Come meet with a few of the Rocky Mountain Naturalists who are doing the Bluebird Box Monitoring in the East Kootenay area. You’ve seen the Bluebird Boxes as you have been driving anywhere in the area. Learn what monitoring is being done and learn more about the Bluebirds themselves. This display is located in the field close to the Bluebird Box behind Elizabeth Lake Lodge.
4. Bird Friendly Cities – Located right beside the Bluebird display, you can learn a bit more about what makes a Bird Friendly City, and check out the cat collar attachment that will help the birds be warned that a cat is on the prowl!
5. Waterfowl Discovery – Located in the new Viewing platform. Here you will discover how to identify the many waterfowl on Elizabeth Lake – there are more than just ducks out there! Identification sheets will be available, along with many scopes that you can use to get a better view of them.
6. Morning Birding Walk - Meet at the Tourist Information center at 10:30 a.m. for a one-hour birding walk, lead by Marianne Nahm, one of our most knowledgeable birders. Bring your binoculars and your cameras. You will explore the area from the Info Center over to the Innes Avenue area.
7. Afternoon Birding Walk – Meet at the Innes Avenue access at 1:00 p.m. for a one-hour birding walk, lead by Stewart Wilson, one of our regular birders at Elizabeth Lake. Bring your binoculars and your cameras! You will explore the trails on the East side of the lake.
8. Long-billed Curlews – 12:00 p.m.– 2:00 p.m. - Located right behind the Tourist Information Center, come meet David Bradley. He is a representative of Birds Canada and is in the East Kootenay area locating Long-billed Curlew nests. Please come talk to him about his research and learn about these birds that are being spotted more and more in the area.
