ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS
Workshop A: Stops Routine (3-4:30pm)
Samantha and Aaron are bringing a bit of dance history to us. The Stops Routine is credited to Frankie Manning in the 1930s created for Whitey's Lindy Hoppers and other dancers at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. It's known as the first Lindy Hop routine in which all couples do the same moves at the same time. Many other versions of Stops have been created since the original, most famously a version known as "First Stops" taught by Sugar and George Sullivan (Miss Sugar is still with us today at 96 years young), and the Mama Lou Parks dancers.
Workshop B: Sugar Pushes + Variations (5-6:30pm)
Sugar Pushes are a classic move from Lindy Hop (and popular in West Coast Swing as well), but there's more to them than meets the eye. Samantha and Aaron will go over the technique of how to make this deceptively simple move feel good as well as share some of their favorite variations to spice it up! And you can try out your new moves at the social dance after the workshop...
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS
Samantha Pincus
After a rough high school experience Lindy hop found Samantha at her college club fair, leeching onto her as she scanned the trifolds for the most joy. In 2016 she hunkered down and started taking classes at Princeton University and Jazz Attack in Philadelphia. Since then, Samantha has placed in competitions around the mid-Atlantic and teaches in New Jersey and Manhattan. She is a part of the performance groups The Harvest Moon Hoppers, Groundwerk and The Hodge Podge. Lindy hop changed her life, and she does her best to bring forward the values dancing and jazz has taught her: community, respect, education, presence, improvisation and creative freedom. Working as a high school art in real life, Samantha loves teaching and growing with all those around her.
Aaron Jones
Aaron started dancing in 2006 with online battles which led to a general love and curiosity of dance. He explored several other styles of movement such as Krump, Tricking, and Capoeira before falling into Lindy Hop in 2009 through his college’s swing dance club. Aaron now competes, performs, and social dances whenever and wherever he gets the chance. He has placed both in the open and advanced draw divisions of the International Lindy Hop Championships (ILHC) as well other events around the Mid-Atlantic. Aaron is part of the inaugural co-hort of the Al-Minns Next Generation Project designed to train Black American dancers in authentic Lindy Hop and vernacular jazz. He currently resides in the Lehigh Valley where he runs the local swing dance organization, Lehigh Valley Lindy. Aaron loves helping his students find their unique strengths and enjoys watching them improve.
