STAND BY ME @ Alamo Drafthouse

While Stephen King is associated most strongly with the horror genre, his works explore many different facets of humanity. Sometimes the tone of his stories is wild, terrifying, and over the top. Other times, as with STAND BY ME, he is more tender and nuanced. No matter what kind of story he is telling, though, his characters always shine through.

STAND BY ME centers on Gordie (Wil Wheaton) and his three friends as they trek out into the woods outside their Oregon hometown to find the rumored dead body of a missing young boy. What starts out as a fun adventure (well, as fun as finding a dead body can be) soon turns into a subtle but undeniably life-changing experience for the four boys.

Starring the talented young quartet of Wheaton, River Phoenix, Jerry O’Connell, and Corey Feldman, Rob Reiner's adaptation of STAND BY ME encompasses all the joy and pain of adolescence with an honest and deft touch, resulting in one of the most beloved coming-of-age stories ever told.
