Description:
This class will explore three different and fun surface decoration techniques using underglazes, Stroke and Coat glazes, and commercial glazes. If you struggle with how to decorate your pieces, this class is for you. You don’t even need to be able to draw stick figures to have fun with these techniques. We will also discuss how to use the last little bits of glaze from the jar to get the most out our your purchased glazes.
What we will cover:
1. String decorating. This technique uses a string as a paint brush and underglazes to give your ceramics a simple and unique decoration.
2. Marble glazing. This technique uses shaving cream to create a swirled and marbled look to your piece. Who knew shaving cream could be used in ceramics?
3. The Peacock Glazing technique. This technique uses fluxes, commercial glazes, and Stroke and Coat glazes to produce something that looks as flamboyant as a peacock’s tail. This technique works best on bowls and vertical pieces that get the colors to flow. This takes some time and patience to master, so we will work through some of the dos and don’ts to produce a spectacular glaze effect.
What you will need for this class is at least three bisqueware pieces ready to glaze. The studio will provide glazes and underglazes for all three surface decoration techniques.
About the Instructor:
Jeff Turner is a Texas native and a graduate of Flour Bluff High School, received a bachelor’s degree in geology from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and a master’s degree in geology from Baylor University. While filing out his degree plan, he discovered that a fine arts course was required to graduate and that’s where Jeff discovered his passion for ceramics. One class turned to several more and into a summer job before graduate school turning out pots for school funds. Life put a hold on ceramics for nearly 30 years and a career change brought him back to experiencing clay again. Jeff mostly produces functional ceramics on the wheel but is constantly exploring ways to push wheel throwing in whimsical and unexpected directions usually reserved for hand building or fusing thrown and hand building techniques. Jeff is a two-time winner of Best of Show at the Art Center Ceramics Show and teaches both wheel and hand building classes at the Art Center Corpus Christi.
