Join us for an afternoon of poetry. Acadia National Park Artist-in-Residence Samantha DeFlitch will read from her in-progress manuscript, Singing Ground. DeFlitch's work addresses environmental crisis in Maine and New Hampshire, advancing images and language of a shifting shoreline while navigating the tension between wonder, despair, and hope.
Following the reading, Samatha will lead a workshop in which participants will write their own poems guided by DeFlitch's documentary process. Drawing from items such as specimen tags, lectures, trail guides, assessments and surveys, participants will leave with a draft piece and prompts to strengthen their own process of noticing, journaling, and writing.
Samantha DeFlitch is the author of Confluence (Broadstone Books, 2021). Her poems have appeared in New England Review, The Missouri Review, and Colorado Review, among others. She is a 2025 Artist in Residence at Acadia National Park and has received fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center and the Martha's Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing. Her work has been supported by the Bread Loaf Environmental Writers' Conference, the Audubon Artist Residency at Hog Island, and the University of New Hampshire, where she completed her MFA. Her second manuscript, in-progress, has been a finalist for the Autumn House Press Prize, Akron Poetry Prize, and Gatewood Prize among others. She lives in New Hampshire.
