Iowa City's annual Public Works Open House will take place at the state-of-the-art Iowa City Landfill & Recycling Center, 3900 Hebl Ave. SW, from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2025.
As a part of celebrating National Public Works Week, May 19-24, the Open House will give residents insights into the City's Landfill. The Landfill receives over 150,000 tons annually of trash, yard waste and recycling materials; staff processes over 80,000 individual transactions each year. At this event, residents can learn about the efforts in place to reduce and recycle materials, how the different material streams are handled, and the processes and procedures in place to protect the environment.
The event will include equipment and facility tours, refreshments, educational opportunities, games, and more! Numerous City Divisions and Departments will have information available about their programs and services.
National Public Works Week is an annual celebration of the vital importance and hard work of public works employees. Organized by the APWA (the American Public Works Association), the week spotlights the work that public works staff do in our communities. In Iowa City, our engineers, equipment staff, resource management staff, landfill operators, streets employees, water providers, and our wastewater staff, all contribute towards making Iowa City a great place to live.
If you need special accommodations to attend the event, please contact our Landfill facility staff directly at 319-356-5185.
