Books & Books is proud to present an evening with James Dougherty and Chuck Bohl discussing The Art of the New Urbanism, Volume 1: (1980 - 2010) (Wiley, $59.95). This event is presented in partnership with Dade Heritage Trust.

Dade Heritage Trust is Miami-Dade County’s largest historic preservation organization. Founded in 1972, DHT’s mission is to preserve our community’s architectural, environmental, and cultural heritage through education and advocacy.Dade Heritage Trust’s current initiatives include the preservation of naturally occurring affordable housing, our K-12 Historic Places, Green Spaces Education Program, architectural and historical documentation (surveys) of Miami-Dade County neighborhoods, the Miami Canopy Coalition organized to preserve, protect, and enhance the urban tree canopy, and on-going efforts to preserve places that matter in our community.DHT also presents a variety of public programs including bike tours, Baking in Historic Places, and free Sunday tours of the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables.

About the Book:

The New Urbanism has dramatically transformed the way illustrations are used to advance the dialogue of community planning and place making. New Urbanists have revived and advanced techniques of visual communication that enable professionals, elected officials and citizens from all walks of life to engage in designing their neighborhoods and communities. While created as means to an end, these visualizations are often compelling artworks in their own right.The Art of the New Urbanism features the first-ever, comprehensive collection of New Urbanist artworks, with more than 200 selected works produced by more than 100 practitioners and firms. The collected works include plans, renderings of buildings, streetscapes and gathering places, studies of precedents, and photographs of built projects. This book includes seminal material from the early history of the movement that has inspired generations of community building professionals, as well as a wide variety of hand-drawn and digital works that represent methods used today.

Through their commentaries on each work, designers share the place making principles visualized through their plans and renderings and how their work responded to the public process. The Art of the New Urbanism contributors include:

About the Authors:

James Dougherty, AICP, CNU-A, ASAI, is Principal and Director of Design at Dover, Kohl & Partners Town Planning. A specialist in urban design and visualization, he has dedicated his career to creating walkable, sustainable communities. Dougherty is known for his expertise in hand-drawn and digital illustrations, which have played a critical role in advancing New Urbanist principlesCharles Christopher Bohl, PhD, is Professor and Tony Goldman Director of the Master in Real Estate Development and Urbanism Program at the University of Miami. He is the author of Place Making: Developing Town Centers, Main Streets, and Urban Villages. He is a noted expert on town centers and mixed-use development, and a key figure in New Urbanism scholarship. Victor Dover, FAICP, is Founding Principal at Dover, Kohl & Partners Town Planning and co-author of Street Design: The Secret to Great Cities and Towns. A leader in urban design, he has helped shape walkable, sustainable communities across the United States. His work has been recognized with the John Nolen Medal for Contributions to Urbanism and the Seaside Prize.
