ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Soul of the Danube invites listeners on a richly woven musical journey along Europe’s most storied river, through the cultural heartlands of Austria, Hungary, and Bohemia. Performed by distinguished musicians from the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra—Yulia Ziskel, violin; Dov Scheindlin, viola; Dmitry Kouzov, cello; and Marina Radiushina, piano—this program explores the musical identities shaped by the Danube’s flow.

From the elegance and clarity of Mozart’s Viennese trio to Dohnányi’s spirited Hungarian serenade, the program reflects a shared heritage of lyricism, folk influence, and expressive depth. Two beloved works by Brahms—who was himself inspired by Hungarian rhythms—bridge tradition and emotion, culminating in the rich textures and national color of Dvořák’s Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, a cornerstone of Czech chamber music. These works speak across borders and generations, capturing the soul of a region where history, landscape, and sound are inseparably entwined.
