Join documentary photographer Leonardo DeGorter for a full-day hands-on workshop exploring the art and ethics of wildlife photography in British Columbia’s rich natural landscapes. The day begins on Granville Island with an intro session, light lunch, and an engaging discussion on iconic wildlife shots. From there, we’ll travel to Minnekhada Regional Park for a 6-hour field session capturing the park’s diverse species — from herons and eagles to beavers and otters.

This workshop covers:
Field techniques and ethical practices
Understanding habitat, seasonality, and animal behavior
Photographing wildlife without disruption
Pre-visualizing shots and planning around species movement

No telephoto lens? No problem. A strong grasp of camera basics (f-stop, shutter speed, ISO) is all you need.

Info: We’ll kick off the day with a casual meet-and-greet, get to know your fellow participants, and review the schedule. This is your chance to settle in, ask questions, and get an overview of what to expect during the workshop. After lunch, we will travel to Minnekhada Regional Park for an exciting 6 hours of photography!

Info: Over a light lunch, we’ll dive into the fundamentals of wildlife photography — including gear, technique, and creative vision. We’ll also look at a few iconic wildlife images to spark inspiration and set the tone for the field session ahead.

Info: Before stepping into the field, we’ll cover essential guidelines for photographing wildlife responsibly. You’ll learn how to read animal body language, avoid disrupting natural behaviors, and ensure both your safety and the animals’. We’ll also discuss the ethical responsibilities of wildlife photographers and how to minimize human impact on fragile ecosystems.

Info: In this hands-on session, you’ll apply key techniques for capturing compelling wildlife images in their natural habitat. We’ll focus on light, composition, and anticipating animal behavior to increase your chances of success. Whether it’s a fleeting bird in flight or a quiet moment by the marsh, this part of the workshop is all about practice, patience, and refining your photographic eye.
