Join Dr. Fast is a series of fun and illuminating journeys through global art history - enjoy a beverage, sit back and learn in this relaxed, entertaining format. Come for one class or all five!
February 25 | Drunk Art History
In this lighthearted yet historically rigorous lecture, Dr. Fast will introduce some of the ways that intoxication has played a key role in artistic and cultural expression in three very different historical contexts: ancient Greek and Roman bacchanals, the worship of Shiva in medieval India, and the world of the 19th century Impressionists.
April 1 | Arts of the Mughals
The Mughal Dynasty reigned India for over 300 years, and during that time they produced some of the most magnificent works of art and architecture the world has ever seen. Join us to learn the real meaning behind the Taj Mahal, marvel at the workings of the Imperial painting workshops, and discover the Mughal fascination with Christian imagery.
April 29 | Japanese Printmaking
This lecture will introduce the fascinating history of printing and printmaking in Japan (spoiler: if you think you know what the world’s oldest printed book is, you’re in for a surprise!). You’ll discover the technical marvel of multi-colour woodblock printing, the world of ukiyo (“the floating world”), and how Japanese prints have influenced artists around the world.
June 24 | Neoclassicism and Romanticism
In 18th and 19th century France, amidst the tumult of repeated political revolutions, another battle was being waged in the classrooms and galleries of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, one that would effectively dictate the Western standards for what art should be for 200 years. Learn how to distinguish between Neoclassicism and Romanticism, both as painting styles and as philosophical movements, and what was at stake in their differences.
July 22 | Bengali Folk Art, Past and Present
Throughout northeastern India and Bangladesh, communities of patuas have been making and performing a distinctive style of scroll painting for hundreds of years, travelling throughout the countryside to sing their illustrated stories to excited villagers. In this final art history happy hour of the season, you’ll discover how patuas have struck a balance between tradition and innovation in order to stay relevant in the 21st century.
