The Counterfictionals is a sextet from Copenhagen, for those who love the films of David Lynch, Jane Campion, Sergio Leone, Wes Anderson and the A24 universe.
Every composition is inspired by a scene in a film they love. They share their thoughts about the film and the films theme, as part of their performance of the songs.
There are songs about death, rebirth, decay, blood, sudden realisations and unexpected love. The stories are told through distorted guitars and meticulously crafted arrangements for glockenspiel, viola, and theremin. Ethiopian-inspired patterns on muted piano, kalimba and jaw harp. There are haunting motifs on flute and bass clarinet, and there are samples from cult films and compositions that transport you to half-forgotten corners of your memory.
Their first album, No Hay Banda, was released in 2019 to glowing international reviews and was nominated for Best Jazz Album of the Year at the Danish Music Awards.
The Counterfictionals is made up of three women and three men from the forefront of the Danish jazz, rock, and theatre music scenes.
