Der er lagt op til både dans og knytnæver i luften, når Suraras do Tapajós kommer til ALICE under Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2025. Gruppen, som udelukkende består af kvinder, der alle tilhører Brasiliens oprindelige befolkninger, bruger musik og folkedans som kunstnerisk udtryk såvel som social aktivisme, når de synger om naturbevarelse, oprindelige folks rettigheder og kvinders frigørelse.

Suraras do Tapajós er en gruppe fra byen Alter do Chão i Brazilien. Gruppen består af kvinder, der tilhører Braziliens oprindelige befolkninger. Gruppen bruger musikgenren og folkedansestilen carimbó, som kunstnerisk udtryk såvel som social aktivisme og modstandsform. Genren, der har rødder i 1700-tallets Brasilien og er opkaldt efter percussioninstrumentet, musikken blev skabt med, er et resultat af kulturel udveksling mellem oprindelige folk, portugisere og afrikanere. Med den sætter de blandt andet ord på rettigheder til landområder, bevaring af floder og beskyttelse af naturressourcer. Og med den fejrer de oprindelige folks kulturer og udbreder kendskabet til og respekten for Brasiliens mange kulturelle identiteter.
Suraras do Tapajós’ lyd er fuld af passion og modstandskraft, et eklektisk, medrivende og kraftfuldt mix af rytmer og melodier. De spiller på oprindelige percussioninstrumenter og optræder med danse iført lange, farverige skørter, som på hver sin vis sætter streg under deres budskaber om naturbevarelse, oprindelige folks rettigheder og at styrke kvinders plads i samfundet. Get ready to dance as well as throwing fists in the air when Suraras do Tapajós take the stage during Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2025. The group, which consits exclusively of indigenous women from Brazil, use music and folk dance as an artistic expression as well as a form of social activism, when they sing about environmental conservation, indigenous peoples’ rights and women’s liberation.

Suraras do Tapajós is a group of from Alter do Chão in Brazil. The group consists of indigenous women, who use the musical genre and type of folk dance called carimbó as an artistic expression as well as a form of social activism and resistance. The genre, which traces its roots back to 18th-century Brazil and is named after the percussion instrument that shaped its sound, is the result of cultural exchange between Indigenous peoples, the Portuguese, and Africans. Through it, Suraras do Tapajós speak up about vital issues such as land rights, river conservation, and the protection of natural resources. And through it, they celebrate indigenous cultures and promote awareness of and respect for the diverse cultural identities of Brazil.
