____Mat Maneri & Hein Westgaard______
The duo of Norwegian guitarist Hein Westgaard and American violist Mat Maneri work with harmony as a dynamic, ever-shifting force, where melodic threads and microtonal textures interweave to reveal moments of unexpected beauty. Their improvisations are rooted in deep listening and a shared curiosity, resulting in music that is both spontaneous and thoughtful.
Westgaard and Maneri's upcoming release Chamber was recorded in Copenhagen in July 2024. The album consists of seven freely improvised pieces, the first four with Westgaard on electric guitar and the final three on acoustic steel-string guitar. The recording marks the very first time the two have played together. It will be released on the Copenhagen based label Gotta Let it Out during summer 2025.
Mat Maneri is one of the leading violists of his generation, known for his unique sound and forward-thinking approach to modern jazz, free improvisation and avant-garde music. Maneri first made a name for himself in the early 90s playing with his father, saxophonist Joe Maneri, and over the years has collaborated with the likes of Matthew Shipp, Joe Morris, Joelle Leandre and Craig Taborn.
Hein Westgaard is a Norwegian guitarist, improviser and composer, currently based in Copenhagen. In addition to his own genre-fluid Hein Westgaard Trio, he can be heard in the post-minimalist cult band Ototoi, in the international sound art quartet Ensemble Ektos, in trio with Raymond Strid and Katt Hernandez, in duo with Lithuanian double bassist Aurelijus Uzameckis or New Zealand pianist Alexander Ventling, in freely improvising ad-hoc constellations, or in the acoustic solo guitar format, where he focuses on his own instrumental fingerpicking songs.
______Forde / Gato / Zoschg _______
After experimenting with a duo format inspired by contemporary atonal music, Gato and Forde meet Laura Zoschg for a trio experiment into free improvisation and apotheotic sound worlds.
Declan Forde is a Scottish pianist, originally from Glasgow, who has been a vital part of Berlin’s Jazz scene since 2014. His music explores the delicate balance between tradition and innovation, blending a deep reverence for the history of improvised music with daring explorations into the unknown.
João Gato is an alto saxophone player, improviser and tune-maker working in the areas of Jazz, improvised music and interdisciplinary projects with cinema and dance.
Laura Zöschg is a musician and composer in the field of improvised and experimental music. Her means of expression are the various colors and sounds of her voice, and for specific projects also the piano, the flute, and movement.
