"Songs of the Slow Burning Earth": Screening and debate with director Olha Zhurba

We invite you to a special screening of Songs of the Slow Burning Earth, an evocative documentary capturing Ukraine’s immersion into war. Filmed over two years near the frontline, the film weaves together landscapes, rare dialogues, and moments of silence to portray how destruction quietly becomes part of everyday life. Despite this, a new generation of Ukrainians dares to imagine a different future.

Its director, Olha Zhurba (“Outside”, “Dad’s Sneakers”, “This Rain Will Never Stop”), is an award-winning filmmaker. Zhurba’s previous work has also earned nominations from Hot Docs, the DOX:AWARD at CPH:DOX, the Willy Brandt Documentary Award in Berlin, as well as recognition at festivals in Seattle, Tampere, Leeds, and by the Ukrainian Film Academy. Her most recent movie “Songs of the Slow Burning Earth” has been nominated for Best Film at the Riga International Film Festival, Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, and the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival. The film is a reflective and haunting meditation on the normalization of war.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion with:

- Nataliia Popovych, chairperson of Ukraine House in Denmark

Запрошуємо вас на показ документального фільму “Пісні землі, що повільно горить”, що передає чуттєвий і глибокий досвід України у війні. Знятий протягом двох років поблизу фронту, цей фільм поєднує пейзажі, уривчасті діалоги, моменти тиші, аби передати, як війна непомітно стає частиною повсякденного життя. Попри все, нове покоління українців не втрачає віри та продовжує уявляти інше майбутнє.

Режисерка кінострічки — Ольга Журба (“Назовні”, “Татові кросівки”, “Цей дощ ніколи не скінчиться”), лауреатка численних нагород: “Пісні землі, що повільно горить” було номіновано на звання найкращого фільму на Ризькому МКФ, Документальному кінофестивалі Big Sky та Міжнародному фестивалі документального кіно про права людини One World. Вона також тримувала номінації та нагороди на Hot Docs, DOX:AWARD на CPH:DOX, Премії імені Віллі Брандта за документальне кіно в Берліні, фестивалях у Сіетлі, Тампере та Лідсі, а також відзнаки Української кіноакадемії.
