Brasilianske Rogê udsendte sit debutalbum for mere end 20 år siden. Men det var ikke før med albummet ‘Curyman’ fra 2023, at artisten fra Rio med sin hjertevarme, funky og genrefornyende samba, endelig fik sit internationale gennembrud. Rogê, der har syv soloalbum bag sig, er en bastion på den brasilianske musikscene: Han bringer traditionel brasiliansk musik ind i fremtiden, som det er blevet sagt om musikeren i musikmagasinet Mojo.
‘Curyman’ er en fejring af sambaen – og en plade med budskaber om resiliens og oprejsning. Albummet afspejler Rogês dybe tro på musikkens transformerende kraft og evne til at inspirere til håb og vedholdenhed. Men Rogê fejrer ikke Brasiliens musikalske arv uden også at se til historiens skyggesider. Som det bliver tydeligt på førstesinglen på det anmelderroste album ‘Curyman II’ fra 2024, “100% Samba”, så har sambaen også rødder i Afrika, og blev bragt til Brasilien af slavegjorte. Som Pitchfork skriver i deres begejstrede albumanmeldelse, så er det netop den tematik, som ‘Curyman II’s vibrerende og udtryksfulde sange gang på gang vender tilbage til. At Brasiliens unikke kulturelle identitet er et produkt af dens diverse befolkning. Vi kan ikke vente med at byde Rogê og hans evigt udviklende musikalske udtryk velkommen på ALICEs scene!

It’s been more than twenty years since Brazilian Rogê released his debut album. But it wasn’t until the release of ‘Curyman’ in 2023, that the star from Rio, and his heart-warm, funky, and genre-blending samba, made it internationally. With seven solo albums behind him, Rogê is a bastion on the Brazilian music scene, bringing classical Brazilian music into the future, as it has been said about him in the music magazine Mojo.
‘Curyman ’ is a celebration of samba – as well as an album infused with messages of resilience and redemption. The album reflects Rogê’s deep belief in the power of music to inspire hope and perseverance. In his music, Rogê doesn’t just pay tribute to his musical heritage without looking at its darker histories. In the song “100% Samba” from the fresh and critically acclaimed album from 2024, Curyman II, Rogê “acknowledges samba’s roots in Africa and how enslaved people in Brazil then forged its sound”, as Pitchwork writes in their enthusiastic album review and continue: “The vibrant, expressive songs on Curyman II return often to this theme: how Brazil's unique cultural identity is a product of its diverse ethnic populations”.
