About the event

Queerness & klasse: Mød forfatteren bag ‘Shuggie Bain’ og ‘Unge Mungo’
(English text below)

ENGLISH VERSION:

Queerness & Class: Meet the Author Behind ‘Shuggie Bain’ and ‘Young Mungo’

Experience the award-winning Glasgow author Douglas Stuart when he visits Politiken for a talk about his bestselling novels ‘Shuggie Bain’ and ‘Young Mungo’.

Class, queerness and problematic mothers. Look forward to an evening with one of the most-read authors of our time and get behind the successful novels 'Shuggie Bain' and 'Young Mungo'. The books are based on Douglas Stuart's personal story and it took ten years before the final manuscript for 'Shuggie Bain' was ready, and the book won the Booker Prize in 2020.

The author talks about his journey from a brutal upbringing in Glasgow to his current life in New York and a career in the fashion industry with the lower class in his baggage. Both ‘Shuggie Bain’ and ‘Young Mungo’ revolve around upbringing, identity, and a mother-son relationship. The books contain great love and a dark side of abuse. His authorship has parallels to Thomas Korsgaard and Glenn Bech, as well as the French author Édouard Louis, whose books also draw on his own upbringing and sexuality.

At a time when rights are being restricted and the political situation in the U.S. is spreading to Europe, Stuart's authorship has an important agenda. We look forward to welcoming the author, and perhaps he will reveal his next project?
