Om Rise of the Sunken Sun i Fotografisk Center:

On 23 May at 4.30 – 5.15 pm Forografisk Center will host a guided tour in the exhibition Rise of the Sunken Sun in collaboration with Art Matter Festival. The guided tour will be held in Danish.

About Rise of the Sunken Sun at Fotografisk Center:
The exhibition Rise of the Sunken Sun by the artist Inuuteq Storch was first shown in 2024 in the Danish Pavilion at the prestigious 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, and is now presented at Fotografisk Center in an adjusted format. The critically acclaimed exhibition has already been recognized as an important contribution to both art history and history: Storch was both the first artist from the North Atlantic part of the Kingdom of Denmark and the first photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Danish Pavilion. Rise of the Sunken Sun weaves personal narratives together with a broader exploration of identity, history, and daily life in Kalaallit Nunaat (the land of the Kalaallit or the Greenlanders). Through both his own works and archival photographs, Storch creates a nuanced portrayal of life in his homeland Kalaallit Nunaat, while also revealing the subtle traces of the country's colonial history. The title of the exhibition is inspired by the flag of Kalaallit Nunaat, which symbolizes the Arctic sun over the white, icy landscape, referencing traditional Inuit beliefs. Read more about the exhibition here.

Partnership and event programme:
The exhibition Rise of the Sunken Sun is presented in a special partnership with Politiken’s Forhal, which will present the exhibition Breathe the Ice with Inuuteq Storch during the same period. With the exhibition Breathe the Ice Storch has created a site-specific total installation for Politikens Forhal. Here, he delves into JP/Politiken Media Group extensive photo archive, which contains more than a century of photojournalistic material that has, over the decades, helped shape the Danish public’s narratives about Kalaallit Nunaat. The partnership includes a joint opening and a series of events where the many facets of Storch’s artistic practice will be highlighted.
