About the event

North Sea Crossing: Sam Grassie [UK] + Kristoffer Birkedal [NO] + Emile
Kristoffer and Sam heard each other play the same opening bars of a Jansch song at a chance meeting in the dog and bell session, south London. The pair are now crossing the North Sea share folk songs from their respective countries of Scotland and Norway, tracing a musical path first paved by the 60s guitar pioneers whose legacy they further today.

With special guest Emile!

SAM GRASSIE
Traversing both traditional and contemporary folk music, Scottish-born, London-based fingerstyle guitarist and songwriter Sam Grassie has been making a name for himself on the indie circuit as both a captivating player and potent songwriter. While such tenacity on the acoustic guitar owes much to the playing of Jansch et al, his debut EPSandwood — a flurry of woodwind, sax, drones, and double bass — carves out a sound of his very own. The record has been championed by the BBC, NTS Radio, KLOF Radio, Wilco Band, Shindig Mag and Clash Music, leading to UK tours supporting Daisy Rickman, Gently Tender, Naima Bock, and The Babe Rainbow. Following a spring residency at Broadside Hacks MOTH Club Grassie was booked to perform at Latitude’s "In the Woods" and Green Man’s Walled Garden Stage. 2025 will see the release of his first album, where alongside original material he marries celtic melodies with the rhythms of desert blues.

Line of Best Fit: "A rising star in the world of trad folk, he’s part of folk collective Broadside Hacks ... carves out a sound of his very own."

Tradfolk: "It's probably the finest piece of folk fingerstyle guitar playing I've heard in recent years. The dexterity is undeniable, but it's the lyrical beauty that Grassie finds in the fretboard that really takes the breath away."

Bert Jansch Foundation: "When Sam Grassie gets around to recording an album of his own, we’re likely to witness one of the finest folk guitarists of his generation.

KRISTOFFER BIRKEDAL
Born in Kristiansand on the southern coast of Norway, Kristoffer Birkedal grew up with a deep love for songwriting, inspired by folk legends such as Bert Jansch, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. From a young age, he immersed himself in the world of music, and at the age of 20 he packed his guitar and set out on a journey across Europe, hitchhiking through Ireland and England in the footsteps of his musical heroes. Along the way, he played in bars, folk clubs, and on street corners, shaping him as a performer.

After releasing his debut EP Baldakin in 2021 – recorded in Bergen and at the legendary Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen – he went on to support artists such as Jan Eggum, Jonas Alaska, Terje Winterstø, Adam Douglas, and Sonic Dawn. Today, he's a familiar face on the growing folk/country scene in Copenhagen, where he has spent most of his twenties.

He is now in the final stages of recording his debut album A Tapestry, recorded partly in Copenhagen and Oslo - where he recently moved.

His traditional folk guitar picking and elaborate vocal arrangements makes him a rare treat in today's singer/songwriter scene.

EMILE
Shrouded in mystery, Emile creates an experimental and organic sound that is truly original. With his roots firmly planted in Copenhagen based The Sonic Dawn, the songwriter finds a new home for his more introspective compositions. The songs are based around vocals and acoustic instruments, often combined with immersive technicolor soundscapes. Drawing inspiration from late 60s counterculture and the surrealistic art movement, Emile’s music can be described as contemplative and highly lysergic.
