About the event

Degrowth cafe #6 - AI & Degrowth: from critical perspectives to the case for Generative-AI abolition

Do you ever wonder...

>Can AI bring any breakthroughs to humanity in the medium-long term?
>Are those innovations worth the costs?
>Is there “bad” and “good” AI?
>Can we resist the
“bad” AI in our daily lives or we are all inescapable victims?

About:

What is the prevailing stance of the Degrowth community on (generative) AI so far?

Jason Hickel on his blog argues that “AI applications for the public good” should have a priority e.g. education, healthcare; Mariana Mazzucato - often cited in Degrowth circles - advocates for “AI under good public governance”; meanwhile the Draghi report predicts - in the EU alone - a 28% AI-driven rise in energy demand from data centers by 2030 (currently accounting for almost 3% of EU electricity demand); but...

What do AI-scholars - with an intersectional perspectives - say on AI? We have asked them to join us in conversation.

We will take it from the basics. We will cover the history of AI - its different types - its ethical issues, environmental and social costs, cultural and psychological consequences and implications for our daily lives starting from labor and workplace impact. We will also learn about potential “life-changing” application of AI in the realms of care, health and disability.
