Note: In addition to hands-only CPR and 911 topics, this free program will cover the operation of an AED that was just installed on the wall near the entrance to the kitchen.

Program presented with the assistance / input of:
• Coolidge Fire Department - engine and crew
• American Medical Response (AMR) - ambulance and crew
• Sarver Heart Center - University of Arizona, Tucson (videos)
• George Staby - former Fire Captain-EMT & Elks member (program coordinator)

Background:
• Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the unexpected stoppage of heart function (pumping), as witnessed on national TV in 2023 of a 24 year old PRO football player whose life was saved using the same techniques covered in this program.
• More people die from SCA than firearms, cancer (breast, cervical, colon, and prostrate), diabetes, HIV, house fires, vehicle accidents, and suicides combined.
• CPR is designed to temporarily supply oxygen to the brain and heart, while AEDs can correct certain heart electrical signals, which can lead to normal heart pumping.

What you will learn includes:
• How to perform hands-only (no mouth-to-mouth) CPR
• How to use an AED in general and specifically the AED now in the Lodge
• Differences, if any, when calling 911 using landlines vs cell phones

Points to consider:
• Hands-only CPR, no mouth-to-mouth, was found to double a person’s chance of survival compared to traditional CPR with ventilation (breathing)
• For small children and possible drowning victims, traditional CPR is recommended
• AEDs are basically foolproof allowing untrained laypersons to safely use them
• How Good Samaritan laws protect people from legal action who perform CPR and/or use an AED

Final comments:
• No CPR certificates will be offered
