New Leash on Life USA’s mission is to save the lives of at-risk dogs by assigning them to specific incarcerated individuals at the Philadelphia Department of Prisons. These participants then care for and train their assigned dog. Along the way, the two rehabilitate each other, with the dogs becoming ready for adoption and the participants building confidence and practical skills as they approach their return to society.
With overpopulation in animal shelters and limited staff, the founder of New Leash on Life USA, Marian V. Marchese decided to develop a specific selection process that is based on behavior, needs, and reactions of the dogs they encounter. The staff in the non-profit is dedicated to purposefully saving the lives of dogs and supporting the incarcerated participants in a win-win scenario that has impacted hundreds of lives.
In addition to launching New Leash on Life USA, Marchese founded The Marchese Group, which is a successful advertising agency for prominent clients in the food and beverage category. In 2013, Marchese was presented with the Kennel Club of Philadelphia's “Dog’s Best Friend Award” in recognition of her efforts in establishing and delivering an impact in the community with New Leash on Life USA. The prison dog program operates within three different prisons in the Philadelphia region, achieving a minimal recidivism rate of 10% after one year of release and 18% after three years.
