Tissue Farm presents Ecologies of An Imagination by Emily Schubert. Join us for an reception for the artist on Saturday, June 14 from 5-7pm.
Emily is an interdisciplinary artist working mainly in the worlds of puppetry, performance, sculpture and collage. She is currently based in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont and hails from Cincinnati, Ohio. She has a degree in fiber and textile art from the Maryland Institute College of Art and has worked in many fields from broadway costuming, to agriculture, to museum education– all of which inform her work.
She is the curator and organizer of the annual Baltimore Crankie Festival and has hosted many “puppet slams” or short form puppet cabarets including her self-produced Experimental Puppet Happenings (2022-2025), one of which occurred at the Confluence Creative Arts Center in April of 2025. Emily has participated in puppet theater festivals and workshops in Europe, Indonesia, and the United States including performing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, at the National Puppetry Festival, and at the New Orleans Giant Puppet Festival.
Emily is inspired by the fantastical and the everyday and how these shape peoples’ perception of the world. Drawing from mythology, folktales, memories, and personal experience she creates narratives that aim to make some sense of our existence by giving form to our collective anxieties and desires. She is enthralled by the emotive power and depth of expression achieved through puppetry and storytelling and believes that within these realms lies a source of real-life magic that is deficient in much of our daily lives. Everyone could use more puppet encounters, crankies, and chances to stop and listen to a story!
