About the event

HIGHLAND LIFE: ANCIENT AND MODERN (Part One)
HIGHLAND LIFE - ANCIENT AND MODERN

HAMISH HENDERSON, JOHN BERGER with MARGARET BENNETT and TIM NEAT - An Evening of Scottish Film, Poetry and Song:

PLAY ME SOMETHING (1989) (72 minutes)

JOURNEY TO A KINGDOM (1993) (52 minutes)

SALUTE TO THE REMEMBRANCERS:

TIMOTHY NEAT will introduce his film PLAY ME SOMETHING – made with John Berger, featuring Hamish Henderson, Liz Lochhead, Tilda Swinton and Margaret Bennett… This film, which won the EUROPE PRIZE, at Barcelona in 1989 – is set on the Isle of Barra and tells a story about Venice. Described as one of the great, unsung gems of Scottish cinema – this film combines ancient and modern, sacred and profane to telling effect... A mysterious stranger at Barra airport arrives (summoned by the Shamanic Henderson!) to tell a story that involves listeners and watchers - s participants. As John Berger said: 'this is a film that has to be seen to be imagined'. (Rated 15)

After a short interval & refreshments - MARGARET BENNETT and Tim will open a short discussion session with the audience and introduce Tim’s film JOURNEY TO A KINGDOM – Hamish Henderson Returns to the North East of Scotland (Made for Grampian TV 1993). Hamish Henderson [1919-2002] fought at the battle of El Alamein and later took the Surrender of Italy and all German Forces in Italy – but this film is about his Folk Collecting and love of the North East of Scotland… (In 2009 Timothy Neat’s biography of Hamish Henderson was published to acclaim and equated with Boswell’s great Life of Samuel Johnson.)

The Evening will conclude with Poems and Song and (if there is time!) a short film tribute to the late John Berger (1926 -2017).

TIMOTHY NEAT - writer, film maker, photographer, teacher and artist - was raised in North Cornwall (mother’s ancestry Scottish). His first job was at Lendrick Muir School, Rumbling Bridge, Perthshire, where he taught at a boarding school for Maladjusted Children of High Intelligence. (Playing cricket for Dollar he often enjoyed himself in Comrie!) From 1973/88 he was art historian at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, and from 1988 until 2018 worked as an independent film-maker, writer, beekeeper and wild mushroom hunter from his home in Wormit, Fife. Approaching old age - buffeted by the winds of fortune - he returned to Cornwall to immerse himself in poetry and art. His children and grandchildren live in St Andrews, in Galloway, and Malmo, Sweden.

Doors open 7.00pm. Our Refreshment Bar offers a range of alcohol-free beers & spirits, soft drinks, tea/coffee & snacks.
