About the event

Joe Cornish - A Landscape Photographer’s Practice
Landscape photography emerges from good technique, seeing, and ideas. This is an introduction to all three.

About this Event

If you come with an open mind you should learn that landscape photography is as much part of the canon of the creative arts as music, acting, writing, painting and dance. Ultimately it is down to work, practice, more work and dedication to your cause.

Depending on the weather we will aim to spend around three hours or more outside in either woodland or on the coast, practicing the core skills, technique and mindset of landscape photography; from correct use of a tripod to aesthetic questions of composition and light. After lunch we will gather indoors to discuss how the raw file is the gateway to our creative vision, to a personal interpretation of the memories and ideas associated with our recorded images. Joe generally teaches these sessions using Lightroom, although any contemporary raw processor should work in much the same way. To gain the most benefit from this afternoon session a laptop with a decent screen is desirable. There will be a combination of group seminar discussion and instruction, and 1-2-1 support when using your own laptop.

Photographer

A working photographer since 1980, Joe Cornish is based in North Yorkshire and has devoted the last three decades to landscape photography, focussing on the north of England and Scotland. His work is divided between large scale commissions and workshops. He has led countless workshops, tours, seminars and one-to-ones since 1997. His prints have been exhibited and collected internationally as well as in the UK.

His landscape photography is based on a philosophy of realism and connection through texture and colour, space and light. Joe is a renowned thinker on the role of photography with a strong emphasis on the global environment, and has written countless articles, many appearing in: , which he helped co-found.

An honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, he was first Chair of the Landscape Distinctions panel. Recent books include: Scotland’s Mountains; Scotland’s Coast; The Northumberland Coast; This Land; Capability Brown; Humphry Repton; Woodland Sanctuary (with Simon Baxter); Still Time to Wonder (on Fountains Abbey); All the Wood’s a Stage (with Simon Baxter).
