TEXT & TEXTILE! is a new body of work by artist Connie Flynn, who was 2025 artist in residence at Norwich Printing Museum. Connie's work explores the relationship between common phrases and the textiles industry.
The work is inspired by familiar phrases we use every day but do not always know where they actually originate from. After much research, she found out that many of these phrases are related to the textile industry and textile mills. Connie has used repurposed domestic cloth and traditional white cotton garments to hand stitch the chosen phrases with contrasting red thread.
During Connie's recent artist residency at the Norwich Printing Museum, she explored the traditional process of letterpress. These letterpress outcomes have been combined with the textile pieces to represent a sense of time, history and heritage.
Connie’s multi skilled practice has evolved through experimenting and combining traditional techniques and modern practices, using a variety of materials to work with both hand and machines skills. She has and continues to develop her practice, 2025 marks thirty-three years of exhibiting throughout the UK and abroad
'It is important to me to create textile objects by using materials sourced with thought, whether it is recycled cloth and thread or natural fibres from sustainable sources. There is often a ‘food for thought’ narrative in my work representing and making connections between time and place, materials and people.'
Connie has formal teacher training in Art and Education and is a qualified Art Therapist. In 2015 Connie completed a Contemporary Textile degree in Shetland, with distinction.
