SERPENT
Serpent is a series of collages born from my desire to use the back of book pages I'd cut elements from. Every Serpent is the "wrong" side of something else. Inspired by the Pigeon scene from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Serpent explores themes of identity, growth, and change, specifically the identities defined for us by others and the changes we make to ourselves to fit within those identities, or not.
"A good case here can be made that part of her objection to "growing up" is based on her fear of losing her identity. So long as she remains young Alice, she is innocent of good and evil. But with her neck suddenly slithering through the tree branches, she appears to be the embodiment of evil. In fact, a pigeon-hen immediately thinks that Alice is an egg-eating snake.
Thus, the Pigeon's attack on Alice changes Wonderland from a pastoral garden to a primal jungle of violence and death. Alice denies that she is a serpent. "I — I'm a little girl," she says, remembering the number of changes she has gone through during the day. "A likely story indeed!" smirks the Pigeon." - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, CliffsNotes Summary and Analysis Chapter.
Mike
This work explores both the journalistic and the artistic sides of bird photography. Birds From My Backyard encourages the viewer to spend a bit more time of their day looking for, and listening to, the life around them.
Each photograph in this show was taken from the front or back yard of my house near downtown COS. Over the last 12 months, I documented and photographed 32 different species as both a novice birder and amateur photographer. During this time, I found a greater appreciation for the non-human life that surrounds us and the small patches of nature we still have.
My hope is that this work will leave you with some desire to have your morning coffee on the porch or at the park, and not on your phone. To look up towards the trees and not down to the screen.
