Southwest Michigan and the Polar Bear Expedition

In late World War I, the United States sent over 5,000 soldiers to northern Russia at the request of British Allies. Mission objectives were unclear and appeared to morph over time, lasting beyond the official end of the Great War. These soldiers, dubbed Polar Bears, came from all over Michigan.

Presented by Nancy Brock, “Southwest Michigan and the Polar Bear Expedition” shares a brief history of the 1918-1919 Polar Bear Expedition, including biographical sketches of area veterans.
