The Cloquet Community Band will perform on Monday, July 28, 2025, at 6 p.m. at the Bandshell in Pinehurst Park
The Cloquet Community Band will open the concert with "Prince Rudolph March." Never heard of it? Here's why it matters:
From 1916 to 1943, Louis D. Gerin, a talented Belgian-born musician, led the Cloquet City Band. A skilled violinist, cornetist, and clarinetist, Gerin had an impressive musical career, including time with the Ringling Brothers Circus and as head of music at Ferris Institute (now part of the University of Michigan). During WWI, he served as an interpreter for both the French and American armies.
Seeking relief from hay fever, Gerin moved to Cloquet, MN, in 1916. He and his family survived the 1918 fire and rebuilt their home next to the town music hall.
A prolific composer, Gerin often named his marches after local people or events. In 1940, when businessman Rudolph Weyerhaeuser donated $500 toward a new bandshell in Pinehurst Park, Gerin composed the "Prince Rudolph March" in his honor. Touched, Weyerhaeuser increased his gift to $2,500, ensuring the project was completed “in a first-class way.”
The march premiered at the bandshell's dedication and was played again in 1976 when it was rededicated in Gerin’s name during the U.S. Bicentennial.**
The band will perform a variety of musical selections throughout the evening. Bring your chairs, blankets, and snacks, and enjoy this free outdoor concert—a celebration of music, community, and the historic legacy of the Pinehurst Park Bandshell as we continue to bring live music back after decades of silence.
