Intro to Equine Facial Expressions & Body Language

In this 2-hour introductory class, taught by our trainer, Taylor Culbert, we will discuss the basics of equine facial expressions and body language. Subtle changes in a horse’s face or body can give us a tremendous amount of meaning about how our horses are feeling and what they are trying to communicate to us. The first half of the class will consist of a lecture introducing some of the facial features and body movements to look for and participants will practice identifying these subtle means of communication looking at pictures and videos. During the second half of the course, participants will venture out for some direct observation in the paddocks, putting their new skills to use as they observe the horses interacting with one another. We will wrap up by discussing our observations and Taylor will share some additional resources for further reading on these subjects.
