This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, a time when returning veterans sought a place to call home. Due to overcrowding in Cleveland’s inner city, Lee-Harvard—once farmland—became a haven for white veterans, particularly those of Southern and Eastern European descent, who used the G.I. Bill to pursue the American Dream. After the integration of Genevieve and Wendell Stewart, the neighborhood began to shift, and by the late 1960s, it had become a predominantly Black community, home to many Black veterans and their families.
We honor the Lee-Harvard veterans and recognize the families who have carried on their legacies. We invite veterans, their children, and grandchildren to share their stories and celebrate the impact of military service on our community. Bring pictures and memories to share!
Tickets for Honoring the Veterans of Lee-Harvard can be booked here.
