About the event

The Poets' Walk Project- Martin Rieser
As a part of the Clevedon LitFest 2024, the Poets' Walk project invited locally-based poets to respond to themes inspired by Alfred Lord Tennyson and Samuel Taylor Coleridge (who are both closely associated with Clevedon). The 31 curated poems were used to build a permanent located-audio walk accessed through
smartphones for the Clevedon LitFest. The walk is triggered by location on a route around the existing "Poets' Walk"

The themes explored were–
1. Themes of loss, inspired by Tennyson's mourning poem In Memorium, written for his friend Hallam, who is buried in St Andrew's churchyard.
2. The theme of the music of nature, as explored in much of Coleridge's work, and specifically in his conversation poem The Aeolian Harp, written in the early days of his marriage to Sara when they were living in Clevedon.

From these two great poets' historical associations with the town, we asked the writers to enter into a dialogue with the themes associated with the place. The poets could approach either or both of the themes with reference to the body of
each poet's work, or to the history of their time, or by mapping parallel contemporary experiences on to the locations on the walk.

Curated by Ralph Hoyte and Martin Rieser, coding by Phill Phelps.

In this session, Martin Rieser will outline the genesis of the project and instruct the audience on how to access the audio experience of the walk as well as reading several of the poems from the lavishly illustrated book. Participating poets:
