About the event

The Full Story: Age as Asset and Deficit
The Full Story of Aging is a response to the prevailing societal narrative of AGE as DEFICIT. In reality, people experience both positive and negative changes in the later stage of life; and accepting AGE as both ASSET and DEFICIT is important in achieving well-being across the longer life course. In this presentation, I will review the AGE as Deficit and AGE as Asset perspectives and explain why the full story of aging includes both. Interpersonal and internalized ageism must be confronted to ensure accurate perceptions of older adults and the well-being for all of us.

Nancy Morrow-Howell, MSW, Ph.D., is the Bettie Bofinger Brown Distinguished Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. She also directs the Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging that promotes research, education and community engagement on aging-related issues across all academic disciplines at the University. Her scholarship focuses on productive engagement in later life, specifically program and policies to optimally engage older adults in paid and unpaid work, including working, volunteering, and caregiving. Dr. Morrow-Howell has her MSW from the University of Kansas and her doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. She was awarded the Maxwell A. Pollack Award for Contributions to Health Aging from the Gerontological Society of America in 2022.

This Platform will feature music from the Cherry & Jerry Ragtime Duo. “Cherry & Jerry” is Isaac Cherry on percussion and Jerry Rabushka on piano; they focus mainly on music from 1900-1920: ragtime, early blues and jazz, and popular songs from back in the day. The St. Louis duo has toured music of the ragtime era throughout the region, appearing at libraries, museums, pubs and restaurants, special events, and more. Appearances include the Illinois State Fair, the George Washington Carver National Monument, the DuSable Black History Museum in Chicago, the Big River Steampunk Festival, and the Missouri History Museum.
