In July, The Midnight Company will present the World Premiere of PRIDE AND JOY by Colin McLaughlin. The family comedy will run July 10-26 at The Chapel, 6238 Alexander, 63105, with performances Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, and Sundays at 3pm. Tickets, on sale now at metrotix.com, are $20 for Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows, and $10 for Thursday performances.
PRIDE AND JOY features the Moran family - Dad and Mom, and their young adult kids, Jay, Sam and Maggie. McLaughlin has termed this show an intervention play. They have gathered at Sam’s apartment for a family intervention - but no one is sure who this intervention is for.
As they attempt to get to it, old memories, raw secrets and new revelations pour forth, hilariously and poignantly.
Colin McLaughlin has worked with a number of local companies, as playwright and more, including composing music for the recent St. Louis Rep show, SHERWOOD. (The first glimpse of PRIDE AND JOY was at a one night reading at the St. Louis Fringe Festival, under a different title.) Next year, new McLaughlin scripts will be seen, including A BRICK AND A BIBLE (with Kathryn Bentley) for Bread And Roses, and ELEVENTH HOUR RADIO (with music by Ryan Marquez) for Action Art Collaborative.
Carl Overly Jr. will direct PRIDE AND JOY. Carl appeared with Midnight in IT IS MAGIC, winning a Theatre Circle Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor (actually sharing the award in a tie vote with Midnight Artistic Director Joe Hanrahan, also for IT IS MAGIC.) Last year, Carl directed AN UNLIKELY HERO for Metro Theater Company, and in September will appear in SATE’S CLASSIC MOVIE ADVENTURE.
In the cast, Sarah Lantsberger is playing Sam. Sarah was in the cast recently for Summer Baer’s SCREAM, ECHO. SCREAM. She’s also been seen in Stray Dog’s RUTHLESS and with The Rep’s Imaginary Theatre Company and their tour of PUSS ’N BOOTS.
Her sister, Maggie, will be portrayed by Alicen Moser. For Midnight, Alicen has acted - in THE YEARS, SPIRITS TO ENFORCE and as George Harrison in Midnight’s Beatles show at the St. Louis Fringe, THE EVEREST GAME. And she directed Joe Hanrahan in the one-man show, THE ABSOLUTE BRIGHTNESS OF LEONARD PELKEY. Last year, she also appeared in ERA’S ROMANOV YARD SALE, which won a Theatre Circle Award for Outstanding Ensemble.
Their brother Jay will be Jayson Heil, making his Midnight Company debut. This year, Jayson won an Outstanding Supporting Actor Theatre Circle Award for his role in the New Jewish show, ALL MY SONS, and most recently appeared in CABARET for the same company and in SOCIAL JUSTICE SHORTS for Bread And Roses Missouri.
As Mom, Lavonne Byers returns to Midnight after winning last year’s Outstanding Lead Actress for her role as Eleanor of Aquitaine in the Company’s THE LION IN WINTER. Later this year,
she’ll be seen in THE MINUTES at Stray Dog.
And Joe Hanrahan will play Dad. Last year Joe performed in Midnight shows SPIRITS TO ENFORCE and OLD TIMES, as well as writing/directing and acting in AUDITIONS and BEST SELLER. Joe’s won and been nominated for numerous Theatre Circle Awards, for acting, directing and outstanding new scripts, and this year the critics’ group honored Joe with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Chuck Winning (who designed Midnight’s 2024 show OLD TIMES) will design the set,
Tony Anselmo (who’s lit many Midnight shows) will handle the lighting design, and Elizabeth
Henning (who’s dressed just as many Midnight shows) will supervise costumes.
Tylan Mitchell will stage manage.
