The Rabun Republicans welcome Gainesville Mayor Sam Couvillon who is running in the Republican primary for 9th District Congressman. That election will be decided in May of 2026.
Also joining us will be current Georgia Public Service Commissioner Tim Echols who is in a statewide special election primary next month on June 17th. The winner of the primary will face a Democrat in the November 2025 election that will also feature quite a few local municipal races.
The meeting will take place on Monday, May 19th beginning at 6:00 p.m. There will be a networking time at 5:30 p.m. where we're serving up some delicious chicken enchiladas.
This will be a good opportunity to focus on a couple of statewide Public Service Commission races that have received scant media attention but are critically important. These races have been held up for years in court litigation but now that that has been settled we're going to see a series of elections every year until all of the commissioners are back on a 6-year cycle.
Fitz Johnson holds the other PSC seat that will be decided in 2025 and he is also running for reelection but he does not have any Republican opposition and will advance to the November election.
Having the Gainesville mayor speak to us in his quest for Republican nomination for Congressman in the 9th Congressional District is our first deep dive into what is going to be a very intense election season in 2026. We expect there will be many statewide open races with Republican heavyweights seeking the nomination.
In the race for Congress Sam Couvillon will be challenging Congressman Andrew Clyde who we expect will again run for his current seat in the Republican primary.
All of our meetings are open to the public and we encourage folks to stop by and find out more about who we are and all the fun activities we do during the course of the year. The Rabun Republicans always meet on the 3rd Monday of every month with an informal networking time at 5:30 p.m. Our program gets underway at 6:00 p.m. All of our meetings are held in the community room of the Northeast Georgia Food Bank located at 46 Plaza Way in the covered bridge shopping Center next to McDonald's in downtown Clayton.
