Ash Wednesday Service

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of an important spiritual journey! You may already be aware that Ash Wednesday is the first day of the Christian season of Lent. Lent begins 40 days before Easter, not counting the Sundays. It is a time for Christians to reflect on their faithfulness to Christ and his way. For many people, Lent is a time of repentance; a time to turn away from bad habits, sinful thinking, and hateful attitudes. Lent is a time to prepare for the wonderful celebration of Easter, and a time to focus on living into the new life which Christ has made possible for us all.

Claremore FMC has a long tradition of beginning the Lenten journey with a special worship service on Ash Wednesday. Every worshipper will be given opportunity for the imposition of ashes. Those who choose to participate may approach the altar rail and a pastor will use ashes to place the sign of the cross on their forehead. Ash is a traditional, Biblical symbol of repentance and a sign that we are ready to go God’s way. The confirmation class will prepare our ashes in advance by burning the palm branches from last year’s Palm Sunday service.

We invite everyone to “fast” for supper that night. Do not eat supper, and instead come to the service for worship. Bring the money you save from not eating supper, and give it as an offering to our Good Samaritan Food Ministry. We hope you can join us for this symbolic service.
