Urine My Garden: Reclaiming the Power of Pee for Clean Water & Fertile Land
Join this workshop to discover why & how gardeners around the world are reclaiming urine as a free fertilizer. Learn how this simple, safe practice can help communities grow more food, prevent watershed pollution, and conserve clean water. We will discuss the safety of urine fertilizer (including pharmaceutical considerations) and practical step-by-step instructions for fertilizing with urine in home gardens.
We will also feature updates from the global peecycling movement and insights from Rich Earth’s community-scale nutrient reclamation program in Vermont. Participants are invited to take home nutrient-enriched biochar, a portable peecycling kit, and copies of Rich Earth's garden, farm, or community scale guides (by donation).
About the instructor
Julia coordinates Rich Earth’s “Urine My Garden” education program, local community outreach, and science communication. She also organizes the annual Rich Earth Summit, the global gathering for researchers and practitioners to advance the field of urine nutrient reclamation. She received her B.A. in Environmental Studies from Skidmore College, an MRes in Human Geography from the University of Glasgow, and has been with the Institute since 2019. She is committed to the ongoing journey of exploring how reclaiming our ‘waste’ can fertilize social change. Julia’s nutrients split their time between Rich Earth’s community peecycling program and her veggie garden.
