EVENT DESCRIPTION: Join us to learn some fascinating California history at the historic Workman & Temple family rancho which dates from the 1840s when Alta California was part of Mexico.
There will be two guided tours according to age:
Ain’t We Got Fun? Tour (Ages 2-12)
This program introduces children to the history of the 1840s, 1870s, and
1920s by focusing on what people did for fun during these decades.
Monument, Memorial, Showpiece, Home:
Celebrating La Casa Nueva at 100 House Tours (Ages 13 and up)
In 1922, the Temple family began building La Casa Nueva, a 12,400 square foot Spanish Colonial Revival mansion. By its completion, 5 years later, the lives of the Temple family had dramatically changed; what was the impact on the house that they were building? In this 45-minute tour, as we explore the house this afternoon, there is a question we want you to consider: What was the family’s intent in building this house?
Was it a built to stand as a monument, to act as a link to the history of the region? Was it meant to be a memorial to Laura Temple, the family matriarch who died during its initial construction? Was it meant to be a showpiece for a proud family with restored wealth? Or was it simply built to be a family home? The answer is not as simple as you might think. Visitors will discover “evidence” to help them answer this question.
TOUR GOAL: The intent of this tour is to engage the visitor in the historic research process. By posing a question at the start of the tour, asking visitors to mentally “collect evidence” as we go through the spaces, and then sit down with them to discuss their “findings” they come away with a better understanding of what historians do and it also encourages them to consider the built environment in a different way. Beyond the beauty of the aesthetics to find the stories beneath them.
