About the event

‘Pakadarpan’ (The Culinary Mirror): get a taste of ‘hitahara,’ menu curated from ‘Pakadarpanam’
In this era of junk and ultra-processed food that often creates long-term health risks, offer yourself the virtue of a unique healthy and tasty twelve-course lunch, the menu of which has been curated from the most ancient book on culinary art, ‘Pakadarpanam,’ authored by Raja Nala, the legendary king of the state of Nishadha.

He was a Master Chef of antiquity. Raja Nala was endowed with eight boons from Indra, Agni, Varuna and Yama. He was peerless in cooking and chariot driving. Inspired by the auspicious occasion of Shravani Purnima, the holy appearance day of Lord Balarama, the God of agriculture and World Sanskrit Day falling on August 9, Paushtik Life is hosting this exclusive lunch in order to promote healthy meals and to create awareness against poor dietary habits. Āhāra (food) is the prime need of every individual and human-beings are the reflection of a sort of food which has been ingested by them. The present society is witnessing an alarming rise in lifestyle diseases due to several contributing factors including obesity, hypertension, cardiac problems and cancer.

The need of the hour is to turn our attention back to the profound wisdom of ancient sages and masters of culinary science who upheld the intrinsic benefits of different natural food and spices. An ideal āhāra is the prime need for the sustenance of life. Āhāra can be broadly divided in two types i.e. Hitāhāra and Ahitāhāra. Hitāhāra is responsible for the normal growth and development of the Śarīra (body) and Ahitāhāra, also called as Viruddhāhāra, interferes with normal body functions and causes many diseases. It is important to know the influence of the Vedas on food and agriculture as well. The Kashyap Samhita has detailed accounts of every aspects of rice cultivation. The Brihadaranyaka Samhita states that there are ten food grains. These were barley, rice, sesame, kidney beans (masha), millet, panic seeds (priyangu), wheat, lentils and horsegram.

The Arthshastra mentions about sugarcane and mustard, linseed, safflower (kusumbha) and kodharva. In our efforts to Eat Right, we should obtain knowledge from classic Sanskrit texts such as ‘Pakadarpana’ or Manasollas’ by King Someswara III of the Chalukya dynasty. The traditional Indian approach to food not only managed to balance the needs of the ascetic yogi but also balanced health with taste.

By organising such programs, Paushtik life wants to create an ecosystem for stimulating open discussions on the virtue and values of traditional Indian food. Let’s bring ancient flavors to modern plates—authentically, responsibly, and deliciously. Join the mission to popularise Vedic Cuisine.

Please note: Each day has two time slots, 12:30 and 1:30. You will be assigned to come in one of these slots; please be on time.
