🌾 Miaoli Hakka Papermaking Culture Trip 📜

🌾Toufen is a town in Miaoli that is majority Hakka, and home to some of the oldest papermaking studios in Taiwan. The papermaking handcraft in Miaoli can be traced back to 19th century Taiwan, where it was historically used to make paper money. It is characterized by a thick texture made with local plant fibers from Miaoli’s rich flora, such as makino bamboo, shell ginger leaves, and ginger lily.
🌾The new generation of Hakka handmade paper artisans such as Chen Shih-Yi (陳世翊), has found a way to make traditional Hakka handmade paper sustainably by reusing plant fiber discards such as parts of sedge grass that are unused by local straw hats and tatami makers.
👉 We will travel to Toufen from Taipei to participate in an in-depth traditional Hakka papermaking workshop at Hutzu Studio. Mr. Chen will show us the traditional processes and techniques of Miaoli’s unique Hakka papermaking through two workshop sessions.
🔹 The first session will introduce the history and traditional processes of Hakka handmade paper using sustainable plant fibers.
🔹In the second session, you will learn about the traditional paper pressing process with Taiwanese crabapple flower patterns, a vintage pattern used in glassmaking during the 1950s.
🌾 During the trip, we will also experience Hakka culture by making your own Hakka snacks and taking a guided walk around Toufen to learn about the historical Hakka heritage of Toufen.
