In this relaxed and informal one day singer’s workshop, multi-award winning jazz vocalist Claire Martin will help you discover how to make a jazz standard your own while exploring vocal craft, style and stagecraft in a supportive setting.
The morning session will be discussion on vocal health, warming up the voice, talking through what makes ‘a jazz singer’ and exploring jazz repertoire and form. Vocal range and tone will also be part of the topics discussed. We will also use this time to trouble shoot any individual requests such as: counting in, mic technique and keys.
For the afternoon session participants will have the opportunity to perform a pre-selected jazz standard song accompanied by Rob Barron who is one of the most in-demand jazz pianists on the UK jazz scene and regularly plays with the BBC Big Band and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra. He has a vast knowledge of the genre and is the singers ‘go to’ accompanist for his exquisite musicianship.
What you’ll get from the day:
• A deeper understanding of how your voice actually works and how to look after it
• Practical help with finding songs that suit you and how to choose the right key
• Tools to extend your range and vocal colours
• How to use phrasing, timing and form to make a jazz standard your own
• How to communicate with the band
• Feedback and inspiration to move your artistry forward
• A chance to network with other singers and sing with Rob Barron!
Observer places are available if you feel this would be a more comfortable choice for you. All observers are asked to join in the vocal warm up’s and of course can learn from the feedback given to the participants. We ask our observers to be our ‘audience’ for the performances. Workshops can be daunting, but this day is first and foremost about learning through fun and enjoying making music together.
