More info—
On the Western Edge of The Everglades and deep in the heart of 10,000 Islands, Chokoloskee Island has been called one of Florida’s last frontiers. At the Historic Smallwood Store you will learn the story of the pioneers who tamed this vast wilderness as well as learning about the earlier inhabitants of Chokoloskee Island.
Established in 1906 by Ted Smallwood, the trading post was hit hard by the storm of 1924, requiring major repairs, and raised onto pilings in 1926—just in time to survive the 'Big one of 1926'
On Jan 23–24, 2026 we'll be celebrating 100 years of surviving it all!
