Lim Chu Kang & The 40 Lamppost Walk

If truth be told, Lim Chu Kang Road today, has almost “nothing in between” for a long stretch. If the sun decides to shine, we’ll be right under the sun for the length of the “40 Lampposts”. However, once we get over the “40 lamp posts”, things get better.

Not many of us know this. But Lim Chu Kang Road is one of Singapore’s 5 heritage roads. The luxuriant country road is just after the 40 lamp posts. The history, culture and heritage here is hardly evident. It wasn’t long ago when Ama Keng was bursting with village life.

All told, it is going to be long walk if we were to do this tour on foot. So, this is how we are going to do it. We’ll meet 9am, at Choa Chu Kang MRT. From here, we’ll take a scenic bus ride, (all 40 minutes of it to Lim Chu Kang Road). Our walk is just a little over 2km, maybe 3.

We’ll tour part of Lim Chu Kang Road (especially on the dual-lane country road) and if we still have the stamina, we’ll include Jalan Bahtera and try and find out why Lt. General Yamashita chose to arrive into Singapore via Lim Chu Kang.

There is no fixed theme on this tour – because, Lim Chu Kang, like Fort Canning, can be a multi-faceted tour. We’ll take it as we go along – from war to defense, to farming (& the country life) and The Progress of Singapore. Meet me, 9am at Choa Chu Kang MRT, 18th October 2025 (SATURDAY). Take Exit A, and meet me in front of McDonald’s.
