Dave O’Higgins (b. 1964, Birmingham) is a leading British jazz saxophonist, composer, arranger, producer, and educator whose playing is known for its lyrical fluency, technical command, and deep swing feel. Influenced by Dexter Gordon, Charlie Parker, and Michael Brecker, O’Higgins emerged in the 1980s with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and gained wider recognition touring and recording with Matt Bianco, Incognito, and Level 42. His saxophone work with Matt Bianco helped define the group’s sophisticated blend of jazz, Latin, and pop during the 1990s and beyond.
As a solo artist, O’Higgins has released over 20 acclaimed albums, including The Real Dave O’Higgins, It’s Always 9:30 in Zog, and Pluto (with guitarist Rob Luft). Critics have praised his “dazzling invention and deft swing” (The Guardian), “breath-taking fluency” (BBC Music Magazine), and “warm, soulful tone” (Jazzwise). His recent albums with Luft—including O’Higgins & Luft Play Monk & Trane—have been widely lauded for their inventive arrangements and empathetic interplay.
O’Higgins has also performed with Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Jamie Cullum, and Kyle Eastwood, and is a fixture on the UK jazz scene. He co-leads the duo His ’n’ Hers with his wife Judith O’Higgins and runs his own studio, continuing to shape contemporary jazz from both sides of the glass.
