Come learn the basics and foundation of South Asian classical music and go on a deeper drive into the history and scales of Hindustani ragas and learn more about this ancient art form from one of it’s most dedicated practitioners, Alam Khan.
Alam Khan is the senior instructor at the famed Ali Akbar College of Music in the Bay Area, the oldest institution of learning Indian classical music in the United States. The school was founded in 1968 by Alam’s late father, the great musician, Ali Akbar Khan. Alam studied sarod under his father in the guru-shishya tradition from age seven. Alam is the direct heir to the legacy of the Senia Maihar gharana (school of learning in a style of playing) which was established by his grandfather Baba Alauddin Khan in the 19th century in India. Alauddin Khan is a pillar of South Asian classical music in the 20th century and was the teacher to not only his son, Ali Akbar Khan, but also to Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Bannerjee, and Aashish Khan as well. Alam recently joined as the Professor of Indian Music At CalArts in Los Angeles, CA.
Alam will give a presentation and talk and work with music students and music lovers to help give them a better understanding and appreciation for the ancient music system and artform.
Open to musicians and music lovers of all levels.
