Ruyell Ho and Li Lin Lee: Language of Abstraction

From September 19–21, 2025, CXW brings together 50+ galleries and creative spaces across the city, drawing more than 5,000 attendees. As part of CXW, we will host the opening reception for our upcoming exhibition, Language of Abstraction.

Chicago has long been known for its distinctive blend of Surrealist and Pop Art–influenced figuration—a legacy carried forward by artists Ruyell Ho and Li Lin Lee. Curated by Larry Lee (@‌lardamang), this exhibition brings together selected works spanning more than fifty years of their practice.

Through abstraction, Ho and Lee reimagine language both directly and indirectly, transforming it into visual form. While each has forged an independent path, their work parallels one another in a shared pursuit: creating a personal lexicon that treats form, structure, and mechanics as the very “body” of written language, whether expressed through ideogram or calligraphy.

Together, we’ll celebrate the innovations of the Chinese diaspora and represent Chinatown in this citywide celebration of contemporary art and culture. Organized by @‌chicagoexhibitionweekend with cultural producer @‌gertie.chicago and international art fair partner @‌expochicago, CXW is more than an art weekend. It is a chance to rediscover Chicago’s cultural spirit, neighborhood by neighborhood.
