Today we will be learning about and indulging in herbalism by making herbal extracts. Herbalism, an indigenous practice, is the use of plants for health and wellness. Herbal extracts separate the beneficial parts of a plant from the less useful parts; today we will be learning about liquid extracts: tinctures, tonics, and teas. The difference between tinctures, teas, and tonics is the solvent used to pull the active components from the plant parts.
The herbs we will be learning about and using are lemon balm, sage, mint, goldenrod and rose. All of these and more are grown in our GLP gardens. We'll give you a tour so you can harvest your own medicine anytime you visit.
The Green Lots Project (GLP) practices food autonomy through community gardening. We are based on the Southside of Chicago. We are explicitly anti-racist, pro-Black, pro-indigenous and use the wisdom of African heritage knowledge and indigenous traditional ecological knowledge along with permacutlure design to build community and improve our lives. We are part of a growing food revolution! See you in the soil!!!
