Rescheduled for June 14th.
In this workshop, we will focus on the fascinating processes through which our youngest children gradually gain control of their bodies, arms and legs. Drawing from CDC and Illinois Early Learning Guidelines, we will start with a review of what Gross Motor Skills are and how to consider them separately from other developmental domains. Next, we move to the milestones that children typically move through as they advance toward key thresholds like Sitting, walking, kicking, etc. After a short discussion of when to worry about potential developmental delays, we will turn from formal concepts to real world applications.
How caregivers of all types can support young children to develop strong gross motor skills will take up the second half of our morning. Setting up supportive environments, responding to children’s interests, and naturally occurring opportunities for learning will all be part of our conversation. Using just 2-3 examples, we will end by considering how concepts from today's seminar can be easily applied when visiting Hyde Park’s many wonderful parks and early childhood play spaces.
There will be plenty of time throughout for asking questions and sharing ideas and examples from your own experience.
Join us at HPNC on Saturday, June 14, from 10:00 - 11:30 AM for this engaging, discussion-based session!
Our speakers are Sarah Diwan, PhD and Stephanie Haddad, BA both from the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club
Sarah has been with HPNC since 2008, when she first rented space for early childhood art and music classes. The classes were supported in part by a grant from the University of Chicago to develop local childcare resources and were designed to support child development while also mentoring community providers. Kids had fun while the classes modeled to home daycare providers and nannies how to plan for and implement developmentally appropriate activities, spaces, and supplies. In 2010 Sarah joined the HPNC staff as Early Childhood Director. Since then, she has held many different positions at HPNC including Development Director and Executive Director. No matter the official role, for the past 17 years, Early Childhood Education and Childcare Consultation have been part of the job!
Stephanie is a graduate student at the University of Chicago’s Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice where she is studying social policy and administration with a focus on children and families in systems contexts. As an undergraduate student, she double majored in Psychology and Linguistics where she developed a deep passion for understanding how early childhood experiences shape lifelong health, social, and economic outcomes. Stephanie is a social work intern at HPNC where she conducts grant research, provides case management services for after school students, supports event operations, and facilitates both fine and gross motor skills activities at Tot Lot, Messy Art, Motor Monkeys, and Baby & Caregiver Yoga.
